History

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), earlier known as Nhava Sheva, was commissioned on the 26th of May, 1989. It is located on the west coast of India, within the Mumbai harbour. Accessible via the Thane creek, the JNPT Port is the largest container port in India. Initially planned to be a “satellite” to the Mumbai Port to help in reducing traffic at the latter, eventually it developed as an independent port.

Being one of the oldest ports in India, the Mumbai port was proving to be structurally inadequate to meet the requirements of modern cargo handling. Hence, the Port was simply incapable of handling the expanding volume of modern cargo. As the need for a new port in the Mumbai region was becoming imperative, it eventually led to the birth of JNPT in 1989.

The JN Port is the biggest container handling port in India. Handling around 44% of the country’s containerized cargo, it has crossed the historic landmark of 4 million TEUs in container throughput consistently for the last five years. Among the top 100 Container Ports in the world, JNP is ranked 31st. It handled 64 million tonnes of total cargo in FY2015-16, amounting to ₹1,508 crores, and promises to continue growing exponentially. Since its inception, the JNPT Mumbai has made profound improvements in the Indian port sector – aiming to set a new standard for the heights India could reach in technological innovation and administrative skill.

Facilities

The JNPT Container Terminal is operated by JNPT, and has a quay length of 2,230ft along with 3 berths.

A consortium led by P&O has leased The Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal. It was commissioned in July 2000, and has a 2,000ft quay length. With two berths, it can handle up to 15.6 million tons of cargo. NSICT was India’s first privately managed container terminal. In 2006, a third container terminal operated by APM Terminals with the capacity to handle 1.3 Million TEUs, Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd was commissioned. A new standalone container terminal by the name of NSIGT having a quay length of 330m and a capacity of 12.5 Million Tonnes became operational in September 2015. Work has begun on the commissioning of a fourth container terminal with a quay length of 2,000 m. It will be operated by PSA and will have a capacity of around 4.8 Million TEUs (60 MTPA). A total of 34 Container Freight Stations (CFS) are present in the JNPT. The Radio Frequency Identification Tag (RFID) system would also be implemented soon at various locations.
